What drew you to interfaith work and Building Bridges Burnley specifically?
As a Christian, I believe that every child of God matters and that we are all children of God, irrespective of our different faiths. Following Bishop Philip's work, he asked me to become involved in Building Bridges, which was both a great pleasure and a delight. It's wonderful to meet people from different communities and faiths, and to share together in the love of God.
Can you share a moment when you realised the importance of Building Bridges between Communities in Burnley?
The importance of Building Bridges goes back many years, but it became particularly evident during the tragedy in Southport. We saw how our community came together through faith, and Building Bridges, having built relationships over many years, was able to build on that foundation. As a result, we avoided the riots and disturbances that were suspected to be planned for Burnley. The key factor is that we know each other—that's what makes all the difference.
What's your personal connection to Burnley and its diverse communities?
I am the Area Dean of Burnley and Rector of St Peter's Church and St Stephen's Church in Burnley, placing me very much at the heart of the town centre. I'm also closely connected to two schools through my faith work. It's particularly important that St Peter's, as the Parish Church of Burnley, should be involved in interfaith work and welcome my brothers and sisters from all faiths.
